My intern was digitizing an album of Rosh Hashanah cards today and discovered several cards depicting scenes of Kapparot, practiced by some Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur (next week). A person swings a chicken (or bag of coins) above his or her head three times, which transfers one’s sins to the chicken (or coins). The chicken is then slaughtered (and the money is donated).
These two were my favorite. As if holding a chicken over your head to absolve your sins isn’t fun enough, whoever created these cards collaged in the heads of two of the most horrific antisemitics in history.
